The museum itinerary is divided into two sections, separated by a directional corridor. One section is entirely dedicated to the Codex Purpureus, while the other is dedicated to the history of the diocese and the city of Rossano through the centuries. The Codex Purpureus Rossanensis contains the texts of the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, and a series of miniatures that make it one of the oldest illuminated manuscripts of the New Testament still preserved. The term "Purpureus" refers to the reddish color of its pages. Probably the first illustrated book in history, it is a UNESCO heritage site and is included in the Memory of the World Register.
